The Bayam Kizilliklari, a striking landscape of reddish rock formations in Türkiye's eastern Kars province, is drawing attention for its resemblance to the canyons of the U.S. state of Arizona and its potential as a destination for hiking, photography and outdoor sports.
Located between the villages of Kotek and Bayam in Kagizman district, the area stands out with unusual formations shaped by natural erosion and reddish tones that set the landscape apart from its green surroundings.
Mushroom-shaped rocks rising above layers of fine sand create especially distinctive views when seen from the air, while the area's natural structure offers opportunities for visitors looking to explore places outside conventional tourism routes.
The Bayam Kizilliklari remain largely outside established tourism itineraries, but their unusual geology and scenery have made the area a regular stop for local hiking groups.
The formations are also seen as having potential for nature tourism in Kagizman, particularly for hiking, photography and outdoor sports.
Harun Agdas, head of the Kagizman Mountaineering and Nature Sports Club, told Anadolu Agency that the landscape reminded visitors of the rocky canyons found in Arizona.
He said the club occasionally organizes hikes through the area and that visitors generally respond positively to the scenery.
"Our hiking route passes through here, and those who come really like it. We want this area to be brought into tourism. There are natural formations here. I recommend everyone to walk here," Agdas said.
Agdas said the Bayam Kizilliklari had become part of the club's hiking routes and invited nature enthusiasts to see the area's natural formations for themselves.
With its reddish rocks, erosion-shaped formations and surrounding greenery, the area is being highlighted locally as a possible alternative tourism route for visitors interested in nature and outdoor activities.
