Traditional Rahvan Horse Races took place in Erzurum, bringing together 120 athletes from 20 provinces in a competition organized with the support of the Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality and the Federation of Traditional Sports Branches.
The races were held at the Rahvan Horse Racing Facility in the Umudum neighborhood of the Yakutiye district, a venue purpose-built for this style of traditional equestrian competition.
Rahvan riding is a traditional Turkish equestrian discipline in which horses perform a smooth, four-beat gait, allowing riders to maintain a steady and controlled pace throughout the race.
Athletes competed across several categories, guiding their horses along the track in pursuit of top placements and recognition within the sport.
The competition drew strong interest from local residents, many of whom gathered around the racing facility to watch the riders and their horses compete.
Speaking to reporters at the event, Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Sekmen highlighted the historical journey of the Turkish nation from Central Asia to Anatolia, a migration that took place largely on horseback.
Sekmen emphasized the municipality's efforts to preserve cultural traditions, customs, and practices, describing such races as an important link to the nation's heritage.
According to Sekmen, a nation continues to exist through its traditions, customs, and shared beliefs, making events like the Rahvan races an essential part of sustaining that cultural continuity.
The mayor extended his congratulations to all competitors taking part in the races, wishing them success in the competition.
Sekmen added that while placing in the standings matters, the races also serve a broader purpose, strengthening friendship, unity and community ties among participants and spectators alike.
