A Türkiye Studies Center will be established at Peru’s National University of San Marcos under a new cooperation agreement signed with the Turkish Maarif Foundation.

The agreement was signed in Lima at the historic building of San Marcos, described as Latin America’s oldest higher education institution.

The signing ceremony was attended by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Lima Serra Kaleli, university officials and a delegation from the Turkish Maarif Foundation, known as TMV, an education foundation linked to Türkiye’s international academic and cultural outreach.

Türkiye-focused courses and joint publications planned

The new center is expected to carry out academic activities on Türkiye, support joint publication projects and launch Türkiye-related courses.

Over time, the initiative also aims to open courses at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, creating a broader academic framework for studies on Türkiye within the university.

Officials point to long-term cooperation

Ambassador Kaleli said ties between Türkiye and Peru were not limited to diplomacy and trade, adding that academic and cultural cooperation also helped strengthen relations between the two countries.

She said the center would serve as a lasting bridge between the academic communities of Türkiye and Peru.

TMV Türkiye Studies Centers Coordinator Associate Professor Oner Bucukcu described the initiative as historically and symbolically important, saying: “Türkiye’s relations with Latin America are deepening not only at the political and economic level, but also at the academic and intellectual level.”

San Marcos Rector Jeri Gloria Ramon Ruffner de Vega said the university was pleased to open up academic relations with Türkiye and noted that the center would contribute to the university’s internationalization vision.
