A tornado tore through a construction site in Antalya, southern Türkiye, killing four workers and injuring another after ripping apart two containers where the workers were staying.

The tornado struck a construction site in the Fevzi Cakmak neighborhood of Kepez district. Five construction workers were inside the two containers when the tornado tore through the site, throwing them from the structures.

Emergency medical teams, police officers and firefighters rushed to the area following reports of the incident. Two workers died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital.

The surviving worker sustained minor injuries and was reported to be in good condition.

Tornado overturns crane at construction site

Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin visited the site to inspect the damage and briefed reporters on the incident. The tornado also toppled a crane at the construction site, but the collapse caused no additional deaths or injuries, Sahin noted.

Describing the incident, the governor highlighted the tornado's concentrated impact on the construction site, saying no other part of the city had reported a storm or tornado.

"There were no reports of storms or tornadoes anywhere else in the city. There is no damage to the surrounding buildings, but we are facing a tornado that has completely torn apart two containers in this area," Sahin said.

Authorities continued inspecting the site to determine whether anyone else had been killed or injured. Sahin also stressed that the tornado, not the overturned crane, caused the deaths and injuries.

Heavy rainfall expected to continue through week

The tornado struck as Antalya braces for several days of severe weather, with the Turkish State Meteorological Service issuing a yellow-code warning for heavy rainfall on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Rainfall is expected to reach 21-50 kilograms per square meter in central Antalya and along the western coast, rising to 51-75 kilograms per square meter in the eastern parts of the province.

The service warned of possible flash floods, flooding, lightning, tornadoes and strong winds, which could disrupt transportation.

Heavy rainfall is also forecast for Wednesday, with precipitation potentially reaching 51-100 kilograms per square meter in parts of Antalya and neighboring Mugla province.

Showers are expected to continue on Thursday before easing on Friday, while thunderstorms could return over the weekend.

The unsettled weather is not limited to Antalya, with the national forecast also pointing to heavy rainfall in parts of the Aegean, Mediterranean and Marmara regions.
