The United Kingdom has appointed Jennifer Elizabeth Anderson as its next ambassador to Türkiye, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced Tuesday, naming a career diplomat who previously served as deputy head of the British mission in Ankara.

Anderson, who holds the title Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, will take up the post in August 2026, succeeding Jill Morris, who has held the role since 2023.

A diplomat with deep Turkish ties

Anderson's appointment marks a return to Ankara for the veteran official, who served as deputy head of mission there from 2017 to 2020 after undergoing pre-posting training that included Turkish language instruction in 2016.

Most recently, she led the FCDO's Consular and Crisis directorate from 2020 to 2024.

Her career at the Foreign Office, which she joined in 1997, has spanned postings in Brussels, Jakarta and Gaborone, where she served as High Commissioner and the UK's representative to the South African Development Community from 2010 to 2013.

Earlier roles included heading the Counter Terrorism Department and the Business Engagement Group, as well as overseeing the FCO's Bosnia and Croatia, and Visegrad sections.

Handover from Morris

Morris, who became the UK's first female ambassador to Türkiye when she took up the post in January 2023, presented her credentials to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on 22 March 2023.

Her tenure has spanned a period the FCDO has described as one of strong bilateral relations between London and Ankara, with the two countries cooperating closely as NATO allies and trading partners.

The Foreign Office did not provide further detail on Anderson's specific priorities for the post. As is customary, she is expected to formally present her credentials to the Turkish president after arriving in Ankara. The British Embassy has said media inquiries on the appointment can be directed to the FCDO newsdesk.
