Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan is helping strengthen stability in the region and internationally amid what he described as a difficult geopolitical environment.
Aliyev made the remarks while receiving the security council secretaries of member states of the Organization of Turkic States, or OTS, according to the Azerbaijani presidency.
He said OTS leaders share a common goal of strengthening the organization’s international role and highlighted the importance of protecting major energy and transport routes running through member states.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan’s bilateral agenda is focused primarily on the Turkic world, recalling his earlier statement that “the Turkic world is our family and we have no other family.”
He pointed to shared ethnic roots, political stability, economic growth and security across OTS countries as important advantages.
“In today’s political and foreign policy realities, this is an important factor for development,” Aliyev said. “No country can develop without stability and security.”
He added that industrial production, economic indicators and stable financial systems across OTS members showed positive momentum.
Aliyev also warned that ongoing wars around the region could spread, saying the “geography of wars is expanding.”
He stressed the importance of regional security and called for joint efforts against both physical and ideological threats.
“We must make the OTS one of the leading international organizations through our joint efforts,” he said.
Aliyev said relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan have a unique role and cover history, culture, political interests, security, energy, transport and people-to-people ties.
“Türkiye-Azerbaijan relations are today a very important factor in the world and in our region,” he said. “Our joint activities, especially in the current difficult geopolitical situation, further strengthen stability in our region and in the world.”
Aliyev described the 2021 Susa Declaration signed with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the highest point in bilateral relations, saying it formally established an alliance that already existed.
“Every year, every month, our unity grows stronger and the role we play in the world becomes more firmly established,” he said.
Türkiye’s National Security Council Secretary-General Okay Memis also attended the meeting.
