Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Sunday that they seized a U.S. unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of conducting espionage in the strategic waterway.
In a statement carried by state television, the IRGC naval forces said the drone was captured in a coordinated operation involving intelligence monitoring and electronic warfare.
"Through a coordinated, complex operation involving intelligence oversight and electronic warfare, IRGC naval forces' personnel successfully captured an advanced unmanned underwater vehicle belonging to the terrorist U.S. military," the statement said.
The Guards identified the vehicle as a Remus 600 autonomous underwater vehicle and said it had been "operating in the Strait of Hormuz for espionage purposes."
The IRGC said the underwater drone is now being examined by its specialists for data recovery.
The seizure follows another incident earlier this month in which the Guards said they captured a separate U.S. submarine drone in the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway was a major route for global oil and gas trade before the wider Middle East war began in late February and disrupted shipping.
Iran has maintained a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of the conflict.
The U.S., meanwhile, has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
