South Korea is considering deploying a maritime patrol aircraft to the Strait of Hormuz as part of several options under discussion with the United States, but has ruled out any combat deployment, Reuters reported Thursday, citing National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac.

Speaking during a parliamentary audit, Wi said Seoul was still evaluating possible contributions to security in the strategic waterway and remained in consultations with Washington.

However, he emphasized that a combat deployment was not under consideration, in line with an earlier announcement by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

Strait of Hormuz tensions complicate regional security

The discussions come as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global energy shipments and international trade.

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks on Israel and U.S. targets across the region before a ceasefire agreement was reached in April.

Washington and Tehran subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding in June addressing freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, implementation of the agreement has stalled over disagreements concerning security arrangements in the strategic waterway, leaving tensions between the two countries unresolved.
