The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it had carried out a "heavy wave" of strikes across Iran, targeting dozens of military sites in response to Iranian missile attacks on U.S. forces.
Iranian authorities, meanwhile, confirmed that three members of a family were killed and two children were injured in a strike on Qeshm Island.
CENTCOM described the strikes as a response to an attempted surprise attack a day earlier, when Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jordan said it had intercepted five Iranian missiles, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had targeted a U.S. air base in the kingdom. CENTCOM maintained that all of the missiles were intercepted.
Hours before CENTCOM announced the operation, U.S. President Donald Trump vowed a "very hard" response after a drone struck a U.S.-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker in Egypt. "We're going to be hitting them very hard because it's our turn to hit them. They know it's coming," Trump said.
Iran's Tasnim News Agency said blasts rocked Ahvaz, where parts of the city also lost power, and reported another attack near the southern city of Kazerun in Fars Province. Iranian state television also reported explosions in Bushehr and multiple blasts in the southwestern city of Abadan.
Iranian media further reported that a U.S. missile struck a house in the Chah Tangu neighborhood on Qeshm Island, prompting search teams to look for people trapped beneath the rubble.
Iranian officials later announced that search and rescue operations at the damaged home had been completed, and the bodies of three members of the same family were recovered from the rubble. Two other children from the family were injured and transferred to a medical center for further treatment.
