Former Türkiye national team head coach Fatih Terim has underlined the potential of the Turkish national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also expressing strong support for current head coach Vincenzo Montella in comments made to Italian outlet Tuttomercato.
Terim stated that Türkiye should not be viewed solely as a “surprise team” candidate, but rather as a side capable of establishing itself among the tournament’s competitive nations if it achieves consistency and stability.
He noted that while traditional powers such as Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Portugal and Spain remain favorites, a deep run by Türkiye would reflect its growing footballing capacity.
Emphasizing long-term development, Terim pointed to Türkiye’s recent qualification consistency in major tournaments and its return to the World Cup after a 24-year absence. He argued that sustained participation at elite-level competitions is essential for progress.
Terim also praised Vincenzo Montella’s impact on the national team, saying he was not surprised by the Italian coach’s performance. He credited Montella’s managerial experience and character, referencing his successful spell at Adana Demirspor as evidence of his ability to work effectively in Turkish football.
The veteran coach further highlighted the heightened pressures of international management in countries with strong football cultures such as Türkiye, saying that national team coaches are subject to intense scrutiny due to representing an entire nation.
Terim emphasized that Türkiye's rising profile on the international stage is closely linked to the development of its young stars, particularly Kenan Yildiz, Arda Guler and Can Uzun.
He stated all three players are already performing at elite European clubs and could shape Türkiye’s competitiveness at major tournaments for years to come. Kenan Yildiz, who wears the No. 10 shirt at Juventus, is seen as a central figure in the Italian club’s long-term project, while Arda Guler’s progression at Real Madrid has already drawn significant attention across Europe.
He also suggested that both players possess the potential to reach football’s highest individual level in the future, that they could even become Ballon d’Or contenders if their development continues.
