Kyrgyzstan has appointed former Prosecutor General Maksat Asanaliev as chairman of the State Committee for National Security, placing the former top prosecutor in charge of the country’s main security agency.
President Sadyr Japarov signed a decree on Thursday confirming the 48-year-old official in the position, a day after lawmakers approved his candidacy.
The leadership change began in June, when Asanaliev stepped down as prosecutor general after serving in the post since June 2024.
He was subsequently brought in as acting chairman of the State Committee for National Security, known by its Kyrgyz acronym UKMK. Japarov later put his name forward for the permanent position.
Parliament considered the nomination on Wednesday, approving both his departure from the prosecutor general’s office and his move to the security agency.
The presidential decree the following day completed the transition, making Asanaliev the committee’s permanent chairman.
The appointment draws on Asanaliev’s previous experience in both intelligence and prosecution.
Before reaching the country’s top prosecutorial post, he worked as an investigator at the State Committee for National Security and held several positions within the General Prosecutor’s Office.
He later became prosecutor of Bishkek’s Pervomaisky district before moving to lead the prosecutor’s office in Osh region in May 2022.
With the latest decree, Asanaliev now holds full responsibility for the agency, having moved from the prosecution service after two years as prosecutor general.
