A young irregular migrant from sub-Saharan Africa died after falling into the sea while attempting to reach Ceuta, Spain's territory on the North African coast, by paraglider from Morocco.
The migrant set off from Morocco and tried to cross into Ceuta using a paraglider but lost control during the attempt and fell into the sea, according to Spanish news agency EFE, which cited Civil Guard sources.
Authorities later found the migrant's body following a search operation.
The incident comes amid an increase in attempts by migrants to reach Ceuta from neighboring Morocco.
More than 800 irregular migrants had previously tried to swim from the coast of Castillejos, a Moroccan town near Ceuta, toward the Spanish territory before authorities intervened.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said following that incident that the government had mobilized all available resources.
As irregular migration attempts toward Ceuta increased, the Spanish government also decided to deploy armed forces to the area to help maintain security.
